Celebrating a decade of helping English language learners unlock a world of possibilities with the GSE
Key takeaways:
- Pearson’s Global Scale of English (GSE) is a game-changing framework that helps language learners track their progress on a 10-90 scale.
- The GSE is the beating heart of Pearson’s language learning offering, running through courseware, assessment, and certifications.
- For 10 years, the GSE has supported millions on their learning journeys, and is increasingly helping individuals and companies develop the English skills they need for success.
Learning a new language can be daunting. It can feel like starting at the base of a mountain without a clear path to the top. That’s why, ten years ago, Pearson introduced the Global Scale of English (GSE) to guide learners on their journey and equip them with personalised learning pathways to success.
What is the Global Scale of English?
The GSE is a groundbreaking, data-driven framework that measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills on a 10-90 scale. It helps students, educators, and parents set realistic goals and track progress in manageable steps, boosting confidence and motivation. The GSE is central to Pearson’s language learning offering, supporting our courseware, assessments, and certifications.
Over the past decade, the GSE has transformed language learning for millions, opening up new opportunities for individuals and their families. And we’re not stopping there. As the GSE evolves, it’s also helping employers and employees identify and develop English skills needed in the workplace.
English in the workplace
In today’s global job market, English is the common language of business. Our recent research shows that 85% of employees consider English important for their jobs, and 80% believe proficiency is linked to higher earnings. However, many workers still lack confidence in their English skills.
Lauren Gomez, Pearson’s VP of HR for English Language Learning, shares her experience: “Early in my career, I struggled with English and relied on translators. Realising I needed to master the language to advance, the GSE helped me break down my learning into manageable steps, boosting both my skills and confidence .”
The GSE allows employers to set language benchmarks, assess employee skills, and create personalised learning paths to improve employees’ English skills, which can help attract and retain top talent. Gian Paolo Perrucci, VP CTO for English Language Learning, emphasises, “GSE is crucial for our corporate solutions, ensuring measurable progress in English and efficient global communication .”
A decade of growth and innovation
Mike Mayor, Senior Director of GSE, reflects on the last ten years: “Since 2014, the GSE has grown from 100 to over 4,000 learning objectives, covering all types of learners, from young children to adults. This progress wouldn’t have been possible without the support of researchers, psychometricians, and over 6,000 teachers who helped validate our objectives .”
Gio Giovannelli, President of English Language Learning, sums it up: “English changes lives and careers. The GSE provides a clear and supportive roadmap for learning, that’s why it’s integrated into everything we offer. It’s a unique way we can help our customers and learners succeed.”
Here’s to a decade of innovation and the exciting future ahead with the GSE. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey so far.
