As Pearson wins landmark deal to help Indonesian government lift English proficiency in schools, hear how our AI-led English language products are empowering Indonesia’s youth to thrive in a global economy.

Key takeaways:

  • Pearson partners with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education to help bring English teaching to all schools by 2027.
  • The partnership will train thousands of Indonesian English teachers, ensuring quality education reaches even Indonesia’s remote island areas.
  • Enhancing English education will empower Indonesia’s youth with vital skills for the global market, helping to ensure the country’s ongoing economic growth.

Equipping the next generation with the skills to meet the rapidly evolving global economy is at the heart of what we do here at Pearson. For Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country with a young and dynamic population, the ability to communicate in English is critical to economic success.

That’s why we’re thrilled to have signed a milestone partnership with Indonesia's Ministry of Education to help them meet their goal to make English teaching available in all schools by 2027.

Why English matters

English is more than just a language; it’s a gateway to the world. More than 140 countries include English as a mandatory subject in their national curriculum. For a country like Indonesia, with a population of over 270 million, including approximately 82 million under 18s, proficiency in English is crucial. It opens doors to better employment prospects and strengthens Indonesia’s position in the global market. By integrating English into all schools, Indonesia is making a strategic investment in its future workforce.

Transforming English education, one teacher at a time

Pearson, in collaboration with our local partner, PT Chandra Naya Laksana, will deliver fully online and AI-assisted training and assessment for English language teachers over the next six years.

We kick off this month by recruiting and training 200 master trainers. These trainers will guide 15,000 teachers this year, followed by 30,000 each following year. Every teacher will take the Versant English proficiency test to measure their skills before and after training. Versant is our fast and secure professional English test that measures a variety of language competencies using cutting-edge AI technology. We’ll follow this with tailored training pathways using Pearson’s digital learning resources. Then, the master trainers will deliver the Pearson training online, making it accessible to teachers who may live on the many thousands of islands that make up Indonesia.

A partnership for progress

This partnership is about more than just a policy goal. It’s a mission to empower the educators who will, in turn, equip the youth of Indonesia with the skills and confidence to enter the global workforce and power the country’s economic growth.

As Pearson’s Indonesia Country Head, Jason Polim, explains: "We are delighted to be awarded this responsibility to ensure the next generation of Indonesians have the skills to compete in a global marketplace. We thank the Indonesian Ministry of Education for the honour of working with you to help achieve your learning and development goals for teachers and students across the country. Now the hard work begins...
