This month, the Danish city of Herning buzzed with excitement as hundreds of young professionals from 33 countries gathered for EuroSkills 2025, the largest skills competition in Europe. Over five days, competitors showcased their talents in everything from engineering and construction to hospitality and creative arts, all vying for the chance to be named the best in Europe in their chosen field.
For Team UK, EuroSkills Herning was more than just a competition – it was a milestone on the road to WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, the global “skills olympics.” Selected and trained by WorldSkills UK, and proudly sponsored by Pearson, Team UK demonstrated the very best of skill, determination, and teamwork.

A celebration of technical and vocational skills
Technical and vocational skills are the backbone of a thriving economy. These are the skills that build our homes, keep our industries running, and drive innovation. By sponsoring Team UK, we’re not just supporting a competition, we’re investing in the future of our workforce and helping young people turn their passion into lifelong careers.
EuroSkills is a celebration of practical learning and real-world expertise. It’s about giving young people the chance to shine, to push themselves beyond their limits, and to gain recognition for the vocational skills that are so vital in today’s economy.

BTEC student, Tomas Ankers, winner of a Medallion for Excellence
One of the standout moments of the week was Tomas Ankers’ achievement in CNC Milling. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Milling is a cutting-edge process that uses computer-controlled machines to precisely shape metal and other materials – an essential skill in modern manufacturing and engineering. Tomas, an apprentice at Electroimpact and BTEC student at Coleg Cambria, earned a Medallion for Excellence after a week of intense competition. His journey is a testament to the power of apprenticeships, the value of technical qualifications like BTECs, and the support of dedicated mentors.
Tomas shared his excitement: “I was shocked when the results were read out—it’s been the most difficult week of my life. My family were watching the medal ceremony from home, cheering me on. There’s a lot of work to be done before I can hopefully secure a place in the team for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, but what drives me is winning, it’s what motivates me and gets me up every day. I want to be the best I can. Thanks to Coleg Cambria, my training manager Adam, my boss Ethan at Electroimpact, and WorldSkills UK.”
His manager, Ethan Davies, said: “Skills competitions give employers a powerful edge. They promote higher standards of performance and innovation that wouldn’t necessarily be gained elsewhere. For young people, competitions push you out of your comfort zone and into that amazing growth zone where you’ll build confidence, learn new skills and open doors for new opportunities.”
UK Skills Minister Jacqui Smith, who attended the competition, added: “Well done to all the UK competitors in EuroSkills this week. Every single one of you has made our country proud, showcasing the best of British skills across a range of trades and professions.”

Looking ahead to 2026
The journey doesn’t end here. Team UK will continue training, aiming to represent the UK at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, the ultimate global stage for skills excellence. We’re excited to see what they achieve next and proud to stand alongside them every step of the way.
Congratulations again to Team UK! You’ve made all of us at Pearson proud and shown the world the power of skills, dedication, and determination!
