Reimagining Lifelong Learning: AI, Personalisation, and Accessibility

Vishaal Gupta, President Enterprise Learning and Skills, Pearson

In a world defined by rapid and relentless change, our ability to learn is the most important skill we possess.

Demographic changes and technological progress are reshaping the global skills outlook significantly. By 2030, skills shortages could leave as many as 85 million jobs unfilled worldwide, highlighting a pressing need for action.

Societies and economies are grappling with widening skills gaps that threaten to become skills chasms without intervention. It's not just about a talent shortage; we're also preparing for an AI-driven future where the most in-demand skills continually evolve. The skills required today may not be the ones needed tomorrow.

Equipping people to thrive in this environment is one of the defining challenges of our time. Education, government, and business leaders understand that continuous learning is no longer optional; it’s essential for personal fulfilment and prosperity, and a strategic driver of innovation, productivity, and sustainable growth.

Partnering to transform education and learning

Pearson supports learners at every stage of life - through school, higher education, and their careers. This broad perspective and our deep understanding of how people learn, rooted in learning science, gives us unique insight into how learning needs to evolve for the future and informs everything we do.

But we also recognize that no single organization can solve this challenge alone. Real progress will require collaboration with partners who share our belief in the transformative power of education and learning.

That's why we've expanded our long-standing partnership with AWS, a strategic collaboration that has already spanned more than a decade.

Enhancing learning for millions of people with AI and cloud technologies

Pearson already underpins many of its products and services with AWS technology. Most recently, we collaborated on the development of our Smart Lesson Generator , an AI-powered tool that helps teachers create English language lesson materials in seconds, freeing up their time so that they can focus more on supporting their students.

By combining Pearson’s expertise in education, assessment, qualifications, and enterprise learning with AWS’s powerful cloud and AI technology, we look forward to deepening our partnership and delivering even greater benefits to learners, educators, and organisations.

Together, we will advance personalised learning, expand access to AI-powered resources, support career mobility, and enhance organisational performance.

To achieve this, we're working together in several ways, including:

  • Higher Education: Pearson is expanding its use of AWS's cloud infrastructure and Amazon Bedrock to improve learning across higher education, virtual schools, and English Language Learning products. Leveraging Pearson's rich datasets and instructional expertise, this collaboration will enhance courseware, enable AI-powered lesson and assessment generation, and accelerate the creation of high-quality content.
  • Workforce Skills: AWS and Amazon collaborate closely with Pearson to address workforce development. Programs like GEDWorks, an employer-sponsored initiative helping individuals earn their GED, and Credly by Pearson, our digital credential platform, already support workforce skilling at scale.
  • Assessments and Certifications: AWS will continue collaborating with Pearson VUE to deliver AWS certifications to hundreds of thousands of cloud technology professionals annually, supporting the growth of a skilled digital workforce.
  • Joint Innovation: Pearson and AWS will work together to develop new and transformative learning solutions. These innovations will help improve learner outcomes across clinical and professional assessments, enterprise learning, and English language learning.

Closing the skills gap together

The widening global skills gap is both a workforce challenge and an economic risk. Pearson's Lost in Transition research found that inefficient education-to-career pathways cost the U.S. economy more than $1.1 trillion annually. This is a clear signal that we need to act now and with urgency.

By supporting people to learn and reskill more effectively, and helping organizations better understand and develop their talent, we can foster a culture of lifelong learning that benefits individuals, organizations, communities, and economies.

We're responding to this challenge at speed and scale through our partnership with AWS. Together, we will make learning more effective, accessible, and personalized, helping individuals and organizations around the world reach their goals and potential.Â
